Three vehicles (Tam Thừa): The ways, or vehicles, of the Shravaka, the Pratyekabuddha, and the Bodhisattva.
  • For those seeking to be shravakas, he taught the Dharma according to the four truths, to free them from birth, old age, disease, and death, leading them finally to nirvana. For those seeking to be pratyekabuddhas, he taught the Dharma according to the twelve causes and conditions. For bodhisattvas, to lead them to supreme awakening he taught the Dharma according to the six transcendental practices, enabling them to gain Buddha-wisdom.
